Chapter NY is thrilled to present Sara Magenheimer’s Five Places First, a solo project in the gallery’s office. The exhibition features new works on paper and opens in conjunction with her current installation at The Kitchen: I CollectNeglected Venoms. Culled from her own image archive, the 10 exhibited collages apply repetition, layering and framing in a way that echoes the artist’s cohesive approach to video, performance and assemblage. Working across a range of media, Magenheimer serves to collapse the distinction between these variable modes of making. The filmic is applied with almost painterly gesture, as eachimage becomes an expression of some unknowable energy, some intangiblemood. This impulse is mirrored in Magenheimer’s inclusion of scenes from Antonioni’s Red Desert: a film approached as a painting, a confrontation with our very sense of surface. Whether cut from staged interiors or movie stills, the artist’s re-contextualization of readymade images similarly shifts their perceived meaning. Through these considered compositions, Magenheimer questions the function of language and systems of signification in an effort to encourage subjective perspective and new associations.
